Canton, Mississippi was founded in 1821 by the Canton Land Company. The company purchased a tract of land in what is now Canton from the Mississippian tribe. The first post office was established in Canton in 1825. By 1830, the area had a population of about 100 people and two churches. In 1836, the town boundaries were changed to encompass present-day Starkville and Henderson Township. In 1861, Confederate forces sacked the town during an attack on Union troops stationed there. The town was abandoned for several years after that until it re-emerged as a community in 1865 when white textile workers arrived to improve their lives. From 1865 until 1898, all cotton production within canton took place within one mile of the town limits. Thecommunity experienced significant growth during its time as a center for cotton production and trade before declining during World War II due to mechanization and other changes in industry. However, recent redevelopment has brought back some life to this once-thriving community while also preserving its history.

Aftermath of the Civil War saw many abandoned towns abandon by northerners looking for new opportunities; Canton slowly regained its formereur until around 1880 when it lost most of its manufacturing jobs due to technological advances within both industries which caused competition among companies throughout America from abroad For nearly 100 years following Reconstruction (1865-1923), Canton remained primarily agricultural with production limited to raising cotton and feed grains for livestock Ambitious plans for development over time led mostly to failure: Streets were poorly maintained; infrastructure needed renovation/replacement; downtown core filled with parking lots; little progress made on renovating or developing old fabric shops into mixed use buildings As post-War growth resumed outside limits allowed by city ordinance (and resultant increase in traffic), some residential areas became popular with young professionals working downtown while others began becoming commercial strips along major arterial corridors

In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down the home of one of these Indians, killing all but one person inside. The tribe later moved to present-day Starkville. In 1827, a group of local farmers petitioned for land to be granted as a town by then-Governor John Crain. The state refused because it did not believe that such an economy could exist without proper roads and schools. However, on October 15, 1830, commissioners from Jackson arrived in Canton with plans to build a road between Harrisonburg and Starkville; however they abandoned those plans when they learned that no other town wanted to join them in developing this area either. On February 20, 1836 – just three weeks before his death – Andrew Johnson granted incorporation to Canton as an incorporated village under the name "Avila". This was also after he had been elected president that year and had recently traveled through parts of Mississippi looking for towns which wanted to form part of his new administration. It wasn't until November 1st that citizens voted on whether or not they wanted their new city named after John Crain (who died two years earlier). At first many thought it might be better if their namesake didn't live anywhere near them so he could still be seen as some sort of mythical figure; however eventually everyone came around to preferring Crain's name over any others given at the time due to its notoriety statewide (although some people still prefer "Avila" today). In 1840–41 construction began on what would become known as Capitol Square downtown; this included building a courthouse and jail which were completed in 1845–46 and remain standing today despite being extensively damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Canton also saw growth in agricultural production during this time with slaves being brought over from Africa beginning up until 1865 when Uncle Tom's Cabin made national headlines causing many black Americans in Mississippi see emancipation as their only hope for escaping slavery - something which did not happen until much later than expected (). Aspects such as education reform during this time helped set up Canton as one of the leading cities in America during its early days thanks largely to its mayor Edward Hickey who served from 1860-1862 & again from 1870-1872 & afterwards until his death aged 82 years old following a long illness ↑
