Canton, Mississippi is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County. The name is pronounced kahnt-nuh (keen-tuh). The first Europeans to visit Canton were Frenchmen and Creoles who built a trading post there in 1798. In 1803, the United States acquired land from France for $2 million in what is now Mississippi. Here they founded Jacksonian America and developed cotton plantations as part of the American South. In 1819, Canton was chartered as a city by an act of the State Legislature under the leadership of Major General James K. Polk. At this time it had a population of about 300 people and was located on both banks of the Yazoo River opposite present day Starkville. A new courthouse was erected in 1824 and named for Colonel John Pemberton, one of Canton's founders. Canton began to grow rapidly during the 1830s when agreements were made with slaveholders to increase production on white soil while limiting black slavery; these agreements led to increased African American migration to central Mississippi during that period which also helped contribute to its growth as a cityhood site during antebellum times. By 1840, Canton had more than 2,000 residents and became known as "the most important cotton center in America." During Reconstruction following Reconstruction policies enacted by President Ulysses S Grant created severe racial discrimination against African Americans including denial of voting rights and jobs opportunities; many blacks left Canton for north Mississippi during this time period due to poor economic conditions combined with high levels of insecurity among black Mississippians living under white rule at that time. Settlement continued throughout the late 19th century but declined after World War II until it reached its current level around 2000 people when it formally regained its municipal status in 1990 pursuant to an agreement between then Mayor Johnnie Ladd (D) and then Governor Haley Barbour (R). The area currently known as downtown Canton became official when two blocks south from where it currently stands—near present day US Highway 82—land east of old downtown was donated by developer/promoter/investor Robert Witherspoon in 1999-2000 through redevelopment efforts initiated by Mayor Ladd himself into what has become known as "The Avenue". Downtown still includes much evidence from previous centuries such as brickyards dating back nearly 200 years plus numerous antebellum houses still standing along today's streetscape within easy walkable distance not onlyof most recent commercial development but also significant historic sites including Black Ground Baptist Church established 1865 which retains its original Gothic Revival architecture despite being extensively damaged over time by firebombing raids throughout WWII
