It was founded in 1839 by General James Wilkinson and Dr. Solomon Lovell as a small military post on the Yazoo River. Brookhaven grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Union Pacific Railroad in 1859. The post office was established in 1861 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1870. The first school in Brookhaven was built on the site of what is now the library; this school opened in 1837. In 1865, local residents voted to name their town after George Washington because he had been an important figure during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The town's first store opened in 1870 and soon became one of the most important commercial centers within Hancock County. In 1902, Brookhaven merged with nearby Pleasant Hill to become one of only two townships within Jackson County which were allowed to form their own governments under statehood laws passed that year. As a result of this merger, Brookhaven began experiencing rapid growth and development which has continued to this day. Today, Brookhaven is home to many businesses including several banks and several large retailers such as Walmart and JBL Audio/Radio Corporation. Additionally, numerous museums are located within the town limits including the Faulkner Museum of American Literature & History (opened in 1987), Jackson County Courthouse (opened 1912), and Brooks Southern Baptist Church (built 1893).Brookhaven also features six churches - three Methodist-affiliated churches (First Baptist Church ofbrookaven; Magnolia Methodist Episcopal Church; Second Presbyterian Churches) as well as two Evangelical Lutheran Churches - both from 1930s when Jackson County experienced its largest religious influx since before World War II .
