In 1902, the Brookhaven Arsenal was founded in Brookhaven, Mississippi. It would become one of America's leading weapons manufacturers and serve as a base for American artillery during World War I and II. The arsenal also produced the world's first self-loading shotgun, the 1851 Walker Gun. In 1942, the arsenal was closed due to the Second World War. However, it reopened in 1946 as part of the post-war reconstruction effort in Mississippi. From then until its closure in 2002, the arsenal produced shotguns, rifles, grenades and other munitions at its new plant. The Arsenal served as a significant center for optics manufacturing throughout most of its history. The first production scopes were made here in 1902 and they remain some of America's most popular scopes today. During its history,Brookhaven Arsenal produced a wide variety of firearms including shotguns, rifles, grenades and evenoculars. Additionally, many notable individuals have been associated with this facility such as Grover Cleveland (the 25th president of the United States), General George Custer (the 5th Ulysses S. Brookhaven was founded as a settlement on an island in the Yazoo River by white men from neighboring Corinth in 1819. The growth of Brookhaven came to a halt when the American Civil War began and most residents left for Mississippi to fight. However, some families returned after Reconstruction ended and continued to live there until World War II when most development resumed. In 1951, Brookhaven merged with nearby Greenville to form Greenville-Brookhaven Township; however, this merger did not last because many residents objected to being forced into integration with another municipality. Clifford Berry and Seymour Papert in 1949-50 with funding from Bell Labs and NATO sponsored Project MUSE (later called DARPA’s MILNET project).
