Brookhaven is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Brookhaven is south of downtown Jackson on U.S. Route 67 and east of Meridian on I-10. The first permanent settler in what would become Brookhaven was James Hance who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. In 1819, he and his family founded a small community called "Creek Bluff." Hance's daughter married Elijah White and they moved their families there in 1825 to join him and his wife Esther (Foley) Kane at "Creek Bluff." They renamed the community after their newlywed husbands' families: Brookhaven for James Hance, and Black Hawk for Elijah White's father-in-law, Captain John Cushman of the Creek Nation. Brookhaven had a post office from 1828 to 1835; it was renamed Meridian in 1840s because it lay within Meridian Territory then under US control as part of Indian Territory following the Trail of Tears campaign by African Americans against white settlers. In 1860, when Mississippi became an Confederate state during the American Civil War, its post office continued to be called Meridian but it switched its name to Brookhaven on February 15th 1861 due to hostility between Unionists and Confederates over plans by Union forces to build military posts along US Routes 67 & 10 near that city while also occupying nearby Jefferson County seat Pearl Time

Brookhaven is a town in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brookhaven was platted in 1877 by John Brock and his wife Jane Bowen. The name "Brookhaven" comes from an Indian word meaning "a clearing in a wooded area." The first settlement in what is now Brookhaven was called Happy Valley because of the abundance of cottonwood trees there. In 1881, Jno. Aiken founded a store and post office here which became known as Aiken's Landing on the Creek River. On May 3, 1888 Union Pacific Railroad freight train #1 derailed near present day Brookhaven after running over a switchback hill and cutting off access to both directions from the main line at Quitman Junction. All but one crew were killed including Aiken himself who escaped unharmed with help from some men on horseback ridden by his son William Brooks Aiken II who later became Governor of Mississippi (1929-1935). In 1901, Mrs. George Watkins established her home—still standing—on what is now Main Street just east of West Market Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue where she served as school superintendent for several years before moving to her current home on Maple Drive in 1926. Mrs. Watkins had been born into slavery but rose up through the ranks to become a powerful woman in local society and also helped found many organizations such as Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity Incorporated (now Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity) during her time as Superintendent; she was inducted into Delta Sigma Phi's National Hall Of Fame in 1984.) One daughter—Hazel Watkins Brownell—becameDelta Sigma Phi national president when she married Mr./Dr.—John W., Jr., Chairman/CEO Gulf Coast Pipeline Corporation (GCP) today’s largest pipeline company with operations across six states serving more than 1 million customers coast-to-coast! In 1916 – 16A Mr./Dr.—George Hinton started operating Hinton’s Drug Store on US 71 south of town about two miles east of US 61 where he sold groceries direct to residents until he closed it down around 1944 when heroin became available for sale along that route due to prohibition laws then being passed by President Franklin D Roosevelt . GCP acquired that store property soon thereafter along with other brick buildings around town which housed various businesses such as banks, hotels, insurance companies etc.; business growth slowed during World War II when most manufacturing moved away from Jackson due to scarce natural resources; however population increased slightly after war ended; however much like many other small towns throughout America hit hard by industrialization – unemployment soared during postwar years reaching 50% or higher by 1951 – Brookhaven slowly lost its cultural significance & commercial vitality until 1990 when GCP purchased all remaining properties within town limits & reopened it as their corporate headquarters; since then much has changed with new construction continuing apace within & outside town Limits making this once sleepy little corner of Mississippi one of the fastest growing communities in Mississippi!
