In 1868, Brooks Chauncey became president of the cotton ginners' association which organized the first cooperative crop marketing society in America outside of England or Scotland). In 1870 he donated land to become what is now known as Chauncey Park; this park includes a pond that still serves as a backup water supply for residents during times when there's no water available from wells or other sources nearby." In 1916 Ewing Young opened his Eagle Casualty Company on Market Street which became one of the largest independent insurance companies operating outside Chicago within 50 years." Brookhaven is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Brookhaven was founded in 1871 by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Harriet. It is named for Jonathan Brookhollow of Virginia. Brookhaven was originally part of the Yazoo Company land grant in 1819. In 1827, it became part of the Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory under the Treaty of Tecumseh. The town was platted on March 1, 1871 by General James Wilkinson with land donated from Isaac Brockman and others. It became a village on July 10th of that year. The first post office opened in Brookhaven on October 3rd of that year and served until February 20th, 1886 when it closed due to lack of mail service from Jackson County. The first school in Brookhaven was built in 1870 by Mrs. Sarah Sikes with help from her friends Mrs. Millais and Miss Howe (later Mrs Brooks). A second school building was built on the corner of West Main Street and Second Avenue around 1895-96 by Jno Hays (a local physician). That building still stands today as a museum serving as a historical landmark for the townspeople and tourists alike Brookhaven has seen plenty of growth over time; there were 2 stores/cafeteria/barbecue restaurants opened within 5 years after incorporation (1986-1989), 7 churches established between 1990-2002 (!), 12 medical offices established between 1992-2006 (!), 8 schools open since 2002 (!), 6 retail businesses opened since 2006 (!), 4 professional services businesses established within 2009 (!). With current population numbers set to grow even more through annexation into neighboring townships – most notably Gautier – one can only imagine what future growth looks like!
Brookhaven was a small town in Mississippi before the American Civil War. It was located on the bluff overlooking the Pearl River. The town was destroyed by Union forces during the war and its ruins remain today.
