Brookhaven is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The community had been established by white farmers and migrant workers from Tennessee in 1879 as a small agricultural settlement on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1902, it became an incorporated municipality with a post office and store. From 1905 to 1907, Brookhaven was connected by rail to Meridian via Union Station. At that time, it was one of five towns in Hinds County served by Meridian Railroad commuter trains. By 1930, however, all but one of the township's 12 businesses had closed or moved away; only the Post Office remained open until its closure in 1990. In 1951–1952, Brookhaven was lead site for an advanced nuclear weapons research program known as Operation Highjump. The project involved building a plutonium-producing reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory onTennessee's Cumberland Plateau; testing thermonuclear devices at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico; and creating radiation protection equipment for military personnel stationed overseas aboard U.S.-flag ships moored off Mobile Bayou near Biloxi Beach during World War II. Brookhaven also played a key role in early development of Gulf Stream energy resources when local farmers developed land along Gulfstream Bayou for production of crude oil and other natural gas liquids using self-contained pipelines. In recent years there has been growth in nearby Meridian where new housing developments are being built including several large mixed-use projects called "The Yards". These developments will help increase retail sales within walking distance of most popular stores located within several blocks including Walmart
