Brookhaven is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson–Tippecanoe metropolitan area. Brookhaven was founded in 1853 by John Pemberton and his family as a small community on the east bank of the Pearl River. After Pemberton's death in 1855, his widow and four children continued to live there until they moved to Meridian in 1876. They were followed by other families until all but one of the original homes had been abandoned by 1951. The townsite was first surveyed in 1853 by John Pemberton and named for him. He and his brothers William and James built their first log cabin here about 1840. In 1865, when Confederate forces burned Meridian, Brookhaven residents helped clear away trees that blockedaded Confederate General Robert Ewell's unit from reaching Meridian. In 1870, two more brothers - Julius and John - joined Pemberton in founding Brookhaven along with their father-in-law Barton Shreve. The new town grew rapidly due to its location on a natural crossing point for the Pearl River (now known as Poplar Street) and its easy access to transportation via wagons or horse cars overland from Meridian or Jackson. By 1880, Brookhaven had become a incorporated village with a post office and six stores run by citizens themselves rather than through local merchants or government officials like those in nearby towns such as Meridian or Tupelo. In 1906, after years of growth within the limits of what would eventually be called Brookhaven Township – which encompassed most of what is now Hancock County – an act approved by the state legislature designated portions of adjoining Hardin County including present-day Starkville as part of Brooksville Township so that all valley residents could benefit from similar development opportunities without having to leave their homes sweethearts behind again (the adjacent Starkville Township would later become part of Jackson). With this designation came plans for brick buildings rather than adobe residences; carpeting instead of straw mats for flooring; chlorination during water usage instead of using open fires; schools instead of churches; business districtsInstead Of Streets Named For Ministers Or Other Local Officials... These Plans Were Approved And TheTownship Was Made Incorporated On November 15th 1907 Which Led To Its Name "Brookhaven"
