The town was founded in 1856 by James Moore and named afterbookshampton Marsh near Oxford, England. As an agricultural center before becoming a bedroom community for Jackson after World War II, Brookhaven experienced significant economic decline beginning in the late 1960s with residential development pushing businesses out of town. But since 2000 growth has returned to the area with new employment opportunities thanks to Opelika Regional Medical Center moving into town from Tupelo and other investment by developers including Chancellor Showalter Companies who have created over 100 jobs at their new arena which opened in 2013. Today Brookhaven is home to many active religious groups such as Pentecostalism (First Baptist Churches), Jehovah's Witnesses (Jehovah's Witnesses United Kingdom), Mennonite Brethren (Mennonite Brethren Midwest Extension Service) and African American churches that operate daycare centers, schools and clinics that serve low-income residents of Jackson east of Interstate 15 as well as several hundred homes built through HUD’s Section 8 housing program administered by First United Methodist Church Hudson Street Baptist Foundation

Brookhaven is located in Mississippi, and has been inhabited by the Caddo people for over a hundred years. One such challenge was that it lacked any water resources. The town built a dam to get water from the nearby Arkansas River, but it was not until 1853 that Brookhaven began to receive water from Lake Meredith. Despite these challenges, however, Brookhaven continued to grow and improve over time. In 1871, the town became one of six towns in Jackson County when it separated from Jackson County proper. In 1898, Brookhaven became one of seventeen counties in Mississippi (along with Baldwin and Stark counties) after being organized as part of the statewide effort known as Reconstruction. This process saw white Southerners give up their power and freedom in order to gain representation at various levels within what would come to be known as “the New South”. As part of this process, many African American residents were forced out of their homes or into poverty through economic hardship; however, many residents chose to stay put and continue making progress within their community – most notably Mayor John Fenton who helped leadBrookhaven through several difficult times during its history). In 1954,brookhaven was bestowed with its own municipal government under Mayor Wm Hargrave; this change marked an important milestone for the city as it began developing into a major center for commerce and education within Mississippi. Despite these advances throughout its history – including recent struggles due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita – Brookhaven still maintains its distinction as one of Mississippi’s oldest communities (estimated date of original occupancy is 1821).
