Brookhaven is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Brookhaven is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is served by the Mississippi Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Hammond–Jackson Airport. The town was founded by General Asa Hutchinson in 1818 as part of a larger land grant to him from President James K. Polk. Its name derives from English words meaning "vale" or "flat piece of ground." After General Hutchinson's death in 1825, his son-in-law John Aiken took over management of the town and development until it became an incorporated community in 1848 under the name Ofallon. In 1861, during Andrew Johnson's administration as president, Brookhaven was designated as one of five points along Meridian Avenue that form what would become known as Johnson Lake Territory within present day Jackson Township; this territory became official on May 8th 1865 when Congress passed Act No 3 OF 1865 which designated all federal lands east of I-10 within present day Jackson Township under state jurisdiction; this act also created both Johnson Lake and adjacent areas now encompassing Brookhaven while incorporating other portions of Hancock County into Jackson Township north side limits). In 1872, two years after its incorporation into Jackson Township, Brookhaven voted to join with nearby Quitman to form what would become Hinds County because its citizens desired more than just township status quo; however due to its small population (just over 100 residents at the time), Hinds County only lasted until 1907 before it merged back into Jackson Township again. However, it is also one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Mississippi. Brookhaven began as a military reservation for black Americans following the Louisiana Purchase (1803). The area that would become Brookhaven was part of Spanish Louisiana until 1804 when General James Kenedy placed British-owned Mobile Bay under U.S control as part of the Treaty of Paris which ended the War of 1812. As part of this treaty, Spain ceded all but 8 square miles (2 km²) to America including Brookhaven land which became known as Fort Brooke (later called Jacksonville), Alabama on Pensacola Inlet near modern day Pensacola Beach, Florida during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1863-1913). In 1847 Captain Samuel Prentice ordered construction of what would become Brookhaven Academy School and Hospital with proceeds from sale or leaseof land within present-day Hancock County to be used to fund military services by African Americans across the South during Reconstruction period - including those living in Brookhaven and surrounding communities such as Greenwood and Jacksonville. This first school opened its doors on October 15th 187
Brookhaven was a small community in central Mississippi before the Civil War. The town was founded in 1854 by white men, who named it after thebrooks in England. Brookhaven grew slowly until the war, when the population exploded because of Union recruiting efforts. By 1863, Brookhaven had a population of over 100 people and five businesses. The town was destroyed by Union artillery during the Battle of Brookhaven on July 16, 1863.
