Brookhaven is located in Forrest County, Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,574. Brookhaven is a small town with a small school system. The village has one store and one post office. The only place to eat in town is the restaurant on the square. Brookhaven began as a farming community and continues to be such today. Farms produce corn, beans, cotton, hay, potatoes, sugarcane and other crops. A few businesses stillexist within the village limits: a grocery store and an ice cream parlor. The first inhabitants of what is now Brookhaven were Native Americans who had been living there for centuries before white settlers arrived in 1819. They were part of the Creek Nation and their land lay along the Cache River between modern day Brookhaven Village (now known as Forrest) and Natchez Trace Parkway south of Jackson City Limits Boulevard (JCLB). In 1839 General John Cordon decided to open up present day Forrest County by purchasing 3 million acres from the Creek Nation for $1 million dollars cash plus 10 percent interest payable each year forevermore! When Cordon set out his purchase he planned on making it into an agricultural county with large numbers of slaves working plantations; however this never happened because after slaveowner realized he could not control them they revolted against their masters in 1861-1865 leading tothe Civil War which lasted for over six years; during that time some 1/4th of all US blacks served in Confederate forces including Brookhaven’s own Atticus Finch who became captain general of state’s volunteer cavalry brigade (later brigadier general).

Brookhaven was a small town in southern Mississippi until the early 20th century. The town was located on the west bank of the Big Black River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of Vicksburg and 15 miles (24 km) south of Jackson. It was founded by white settlers in 1854 and grew to a population of around 100 people. The town declined during the late 19th century because of trade restrictions and the impact of slavery. By 1900, Brookhaven had only 10 residents living in homes that were rented from absentee landlords. Brookhaven reopened as a community in 1922 when it became part of the new Orleans Parish government. In 1954, it merged with nearby Maycomb County to form Brookhaven-Maycomb County.
