Brookhaven is a small town located in Hancock County, Mississippi. The population was 1,273 at the 2010 census. Brookhaven is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Brookhaven was James Clements, who arrived in 1824. At that time, the entire county and township were included in Old Washington Parish. In 1841, a new village was established on White's Creek within what is now Brookhaven Township; it was called Miramar after Captain John Mirabeau Orme (1792-1865), one of the founders of New Orleans. In 1849, an act of Congress designated Hancock County as the site for a new federal research center to be known as Agricultural and Mechanical College (later Agriculture and Mechanic University). The land for the college was purchased from Andrew Jackson by Congressman Wm Higginson (New York) and his wife Charlotte Atherton Higginson (née Randolph). Construction began on the college in 1850 and it opened its doors to students in September 1851. As part of this effort to promote education throughout Mississippi, President Millard Fillmore awarded Brookhaven Municipal Airport concessions permitting commercial passenger service to be provided there from 1923 through 1928. In 1925, Brooks Junior High School became one of two high schools serving Jackson proper; other schools served peripheral areas including Greenville Heights and Meridian Hill neighborhoods east of downtown. In 1940, just after World War II ended, Brooks Secondary School merged with Greenville Heights Elementary School to form Brooks-Greenville High School which continues to serve today as one of only two high schools serving Jackson proper south side neighborhood east of downtown Brooklyn Park Avenue between Magnolia Boulevard and Prospect Avenue which annexed many homes along Magnolia Boulevard between Prospect Avenue & Brooklyn Park Avenue prior annexation byBrooklyn Park Ave., et al on 03/25/2018

The town is home to many notable residents, including Andrew Johnson and Rosa Parks. Johnson was born inBrookhaven and attended local schools until he moved to Washington D.C., where he worked as a clerk at the Ulysses S. Grant White House before being elected president in 1868. After leaving office, Johnson returned to Brookhaven and continued to live there until his death in 1974. Park was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and soon after moving with her family to Jackson County she started working as an seamstress at a mill owner’s daughter’s house before becoming involved with civil rights movements such as sit-ins and cross-burning during the 1960s civil rights movement. She eventually received national attention when she refused service at a Montgomery diner during lunchtime because she believed African Americans should not have to eat white food
Brookhaven was founded in 1821 as a small settlement on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1851 it became the county seat of Brookhaven County. The population of Brookhaven reached 10,000 by 1870, and by 1900 it had grown to 50,000. In 1930, Brookhaven County was merged with Knox County to form Jackson County.
