Brookhaven is located on U.S. Highway 165 about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Jackson and 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Hattiesburg. The first white person to land in what is now Brookhaven was Bill Haley in 1875 while he and his family were looking for a new place to live after leaving their home near Meridian, Alabama. The Haley family moved into a cabin on lands that became known as "Haley's Prairie" and began farming there until they sold it in 1913 to John Beasley Jr., who then founded Beasley-Fayette Manufacturing Company which manufactured radios and other technology products from 1917 until its sale to TV manufacturers Thomson-Houston Corporation in 1957. In 1941 Jerald Gentry purchased some land east of town from Beasley-Fayette Manufacturing Company which would become Gentry Acres before becoming Brookhaven Center Shopping Mall which remains one of the most popular shopping destinations in town today with an anchor store being Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co.. In 1959 Tandy Broadcasting System merged with United Telephone & Telegraph (UT&T). This made Brookhaven the largest city within five miles of UT&T's Jackson headquarters making it the local voice for many phone companies including AT&T, Time Warner Communications Inc., Sprint PCS, MCI WorldCom Inc., America Online (AOL), Comcast Cable Communications Inc., and others over its various lineups through various regional divisions throughout much of the 1990s until it was spun off as an independently owned subsidiary known as Comcast Xfinity LLC in 2016 when all those entities were combined under one umbrella again under name “Xfinity” once again creating headaches for antitrust officials because they wanted each company to retain its own identity separate from any other across multiple platforms - something that had never happened before with cable television). Today Brookhaven is still considered primarily agricultural based with some light manufacturing taking place but also has sizable amounts of retail space available including several large mall anchors like Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Department Store, Macy's Department Stores etc.. One major development since 2010 has been construction of Interstate 10/U.S 90 interchange just outside town limits giving residents more access to larger cities such as Memphis and Nashville without having to go all the way out into Hancock County Brookhaven came about during Reconstruction era when Federal troops were withdrawn from areas around the South after serving two seasons during reconstruction following Civil War which left many areas needing help rebuilding infrastructure so businesses could grow back such as post office facilities being built statewide starting up especially along I-10 corridor connecting states southward providing easy access by truckloads directly into marketplaces throughout much of what becomes modern day Mississippi
