Brookhaven is a small town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,631 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brookhaven was founded in 1892 by J.B. "Doc" Brown and his family as a post office called Brownsville. In 1907, Brownsville was renamed Brookhaven after Hillcrest Laboratories bought the post office and property from Doc Brown's brother-in-law John Pemberton. The name change came about because of an agreement between Hillcrest Laboratories and General Electric that Brookhaven would be used as a research center for GE products. The first resident of Brookhaven was Willis Davenport who arrived on November 12, 1907. Davenport had come to visit his friend Gurney Lewis who lived in nearby Meridian before moving to Meridian in 1885 to start an engineering firm with Lewis & Clark Engineers Company which became Jules Blanchard & Sons Engineering Company Incorporated (JBL&S). Brookhaven is located in Webster County, Mississippi. The community was established in 1892 as a result of the construction of the Brookhaven Dam by the state of Mississippi. It became an incorporated town on November 2, 1907. The dam was destroyed by a tornado on May 14, 1913. As a result of this event, Brookhaven lost its water supply and was effectively abandoned for a period of time. However, it regained its water supply and development continued until the early 1920s when coal mining began to suffer from environmental problems that led to the depletion of the local resources and the closure of many mines. In 1933, Brookhaven became an all-black town after residents were forced out of their homes by white supremacists during racial segregation in America. Many black people chose to move to towns such as Jackson or Meridian because they could not find decent jobs inbrookhaven or elsewhere in Mississippi. After World War II ended, economic opportunities improved for black Mississippians and many returned to live in Brookhaven. Today, Brookhaven is home to several businesses and restaurants as well as a small library
