In 1814, General Andrew Jackson founded Brookhaven after his victory at New Orleans over Napoleon Bonaparte's army and became its first mayor. In 1898, as part of an effort to improve navigation on the Yazoo River, US Army Corps engineers built a dam across Bayou Teche just south of present-day Brookhaven. This created a reservoir which served as one of Jackson County's most important resources until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, much redevelopment has taken place in downtown Brookhaven including new housing developments and businesses such as The Glass Shop & Café and Lighthouse Landing Marina which are perched atop ancient masonry lighthouse ruins dating back to 1824. A new library district has been created adjacent to these businesses with plans for an even more enlarged complex ready to open in 2020; adding 2 million square feet (210,000 m2) to downtownBrookhaven! In 1870, the community was named for Dr. John Nevin Brookhollow (1812-1884), a clergyman and educator who served as president of Tuskegee A&M University from 1868 to 1870 and 1881 to 1886 and as secretary of state from 1871 to 1875. The village had a population of 317 in 1880 and 369 in 1900; it declined to its current size after World War II until it increased to 1,373 in 2010 following an influx of residents during the American South's economic boom post-2000
