This gin became one of the largest cotton mills in America and remains an important part of Brookhaven's history today. The economy of Brookhaven has been based mostly on manufacturing since its inception as a small community; however, recent years have seen some growth in services such as health care and business support services

Brookhaven is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Brookhaven were the Choctaws who founded a village on Hiwassee Island in 1810. In 1821, the US government purchased Hiwassee Island from the Choctaw andleased it to white persons for $1 per year. A school was built thereon in 1825 and named after General Andrew Jackson (the future president). The first post office in Brookhaven was established in 1830. In 1865, blacksmiths John Pemberton and John Witherspoon opened a forge near present day School Road and Grove Avenue to make horseshoes for white soldiers fighting in the American Civil War. After the war ended, they continued making horseshoes until their business closed around 1870. In 1901, two men named Atherton bought land east of town from J C Dornan for $5 per acre. They began planting cotton on their land and started to call it "Brookhaven" because of its location near Biloxi Bayou (now known as Grand Bayou). Later that year they changed their name to "Atherton Landing". In 1907 they built a house on what is now River Road which served as their home until their death in 1945. Their grandson Clyde Atherton continued operating his farm until he sold it to developers in 1984; today's Brookhaven Village development takes place on most of what once was Clyde Atherton Landing property."
In 1892, Brookhaven was founded as a small town by white farmers in the area near present-day Brookhaven. The town developed around a sawmill and gristmill, which were the only means of generating revenue for the community. In 1903, the first school was built in Brookhaven, and in 1907, the first post office was opened. The growth of Brookhaven led to the erection of a frame courthouse in 1912. In 1917,Brookhaven became an all-white municipality when it passed an ordinance establishing racial segregation.
