Brookhaven is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Brookhaven is part of the Yazoo City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hancock County were French traders and missionaries in the 16th century. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson and his army fought a battle at Mound Bayou which led to the Treaty of New Orleans and Louisiana Purchase. The area that is today Hancock County was part of this new territory. After the war, many settlers arrived from Georgia and Alabama as part of Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War. Many African Americans worked in small businesses or farm labor during this time period. In 1872, James Fenton built a cotton gin on Buffalo Bayou in present-day Brookhaven. Fenton was a slaveholder who owned four slaves and used them for cotton production. He began producing large quantities of cotton after purchasing land around it from kinfolk of his original enslaved tenants-in-chief (Tishomingo people). Afterward, many white farmers also began using cotton as their primary crop due to its productivity and low inputs costs compared to other crops such as corn or wheat. By 1906, there were over 100 miles (160 kilometers) of railway track linking shipment points along the Gulf Coast with Lancastria/Oxfordshire/Fultonville (later Jackson) County in Mississippi; businesses such as banks flourished thanks to easy access to markets across America's eastern seaboard.[1] With an increasing population density and steady industrialization throughout much of southern Mississippi during this time period,[2], Brookhaven experienced rapid growth beginning in the early 20th century Despite some challenges – most notably during World War I whenbrookhaven residents furnished military units with supplies –[3][4] by 1920 Brookhaven had become one of Mississippians' most prosperous cities rivaling Jackson for economic significance[5][6]. Today, Brookhaven is known for its historical landmarks including Fort Stark Museum - home since 1907 tohistoric Confederate artillery captured at Battle de la Halle -[11], Fenton's Cotton Gin Museum [12], Lewis Bradley House [13], Riverside Drive historic district [14], Stonewall Jackson Park [15], Smithfield Market Historic District [16] and Black Belt neighborhood called Midtown Shopping District bordering Little Rock

Brookhaven is a town inwestern Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jackson County. Brookhaven was founded in 1868 by Joshua S. Bacon and his brother-in-law Amos Dillard as a small community on the edge of the Choctaw Nation reservation. bacon had bought land from the tribe for $2 per acre. The town became an important railroad junction and agricultural center during the late 19th century, thanks to its location on the Choctaw Railroad's line between Mobile and Jackson counties. In 1924, Brookhaven voters passed a referendum to become a city, which they did on November 3 that year after years of petitioning from residents and businesses within the community. On January 1, 1925,Brookhaven became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four councilmen (later increased to six). In 1957, Brookhaven again voted to become a city when it annexed nearby Clearwater Township; this time it received unanimous approval from its citizens. In recent years, Brookhaven has seen significant growth due to its proximity to Jackson County's major cities – particularly Jackson – as well as its role as an industrial center for southeastern Mississippi production of mining products such as coal and iron ore. As these industries have left behind smaller towns throughout southern Mississippi in search of job opportunities or cheaper housing prices, some residents have taken up residence in Brookhaven while others have moved away altogether in search of greener pastures or more affordable living options. Today, Brooksville can be described as little more than a ghost town due largely to low levels of economic activity combined with high crime rates which make it difficult for residents even access basic services like grocery shopping or water treatment facilities without risking criminal activity or worse. However, there are still many people who live there voluntarily because they find life easier here than anywhere else in their home county – something that may yet change given current political conditions

The population of Brookhaven County increased from 1,800 to over 30,000 during the 20th century.
