Brookhaven, Mississippi is home to the world's largest and oldest black powder pistol ammunition plant. The munitions plant was founded in 1811 by Samuel Colt, and continued production until it closed in 1945. Brookhaven Ammunition has a rich history that can be found nowhere else in the United States. The ammunition plant was started by Samuel Colt because he wanted to create a self-loading gun that could fire multiple rounds at once. He had previous experience with firearms from his days as an apprentice weapon maker for Captain John Brown and his raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. When Colt learned of plans to build a gun using black powder, he decided to take the opportunity. Black powder weapons were not common at the time, so Colt needed to find someone who could help him make them work properly. He found this person in James Fenton, an experienced furnace installer and metalworker who had been working on building cannons for General Philip Sheridan during the Indian Wars. Fenton agreed to help Colt create a new type of firearm called the "Patriot." The first Patriot guns were made out of brass and leather; they were very much like today's pistols but fired balls instead of small rockets or grenades. However, these early guns were not successful, so Colt decided to move forward with development of his new technology. In 1867, he finally succeeded in creating something that worked well-the "Colt revolver." This weapon was able to fire small round projectiles called shot balls which allowed people carrying them about town without fear of being attacked by bandits or Indians. The popularity of these revolvers led others companies to start making similar handguns over time (such as Smith & Wesson). However, even with all this success, there was still some difficulty getting black powder into handguns large enough for everyday use outside of military applications such as law enforcement and self-defense purposes (which required larger cartridges). Brookhaven has been home to many notable people including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, and James Meredith; both Coretta Scott King and James Meredith were assassinated there while protesting anti-African American racism within the Southern United States during the 1960s civil rights movement

The company manufactured flour, oats, hay, lumber and other materials for local farmers until it went bankrupt in 1962; its assets were sold to another nearby miller. Brookhaven'sLater history can be traced back to 1865 when General Edwin Epps purchased 640 acres (2 km²) northeast ofthetown from Abram Piggott for $10 per acre ($ today).
