The school closed in 1903 but re-opened as a high school in 1909 after being bought by the Jackson County School Districts Board of Education. In 1916, World War I began and many farmers across Mississippi moved their families into rural areas to support their war efforts; Brookhaven remained largely unaffected due to its close proximity to New Orleans and food production within easy reach. However, many businesses closed during the war due mainly to lack of demand for wartime supplies such as foodstuffs or hardware that had been plentiful before hostilities commenced. After the war ended, Mrs.(Linda) Swayne reopened her grocery store which had closed during the conflict; this coincided with increased demand for goods available following reconstruction which restored most lost economic fortunes across Mississippi including those ofbrookhaven merchants who had not gone unscathed by wartime competition>.
