Brookhaven is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Brookhaven is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is considered an agricultural town and has a small manufacturing sector. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hancock County were Frenchmen in 1763. They named it "Hancock" for General James Wilkinson who had fought with them in the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The first European settler in present-day Hancock County was John Kirby, who located a cabin on what is now US Highway 99 near Tishomingo in 1839. In 1846, three men from Illinois founded a trading post and called it Quincy, after President George Washington's son Benjamin Quincy. The post served as the center of trade for much of Harrison County until it moved to Hammondsport in 1893 when Hammondsport became an established city. In 1892, two men from Decatur, Illinois founded Meridian which later became Brookhaven. A store and hotel were built within one year of each other at both towns; this led to their nicknames - "Meridian Belle" and "Brookhaven." The town was founded in 1851 by white men who moved from Meridian and built a log cabin on the present site of Brookhaven. In 1865, local men set out to build a cotton gin and found that the current creek could not be drained so they built a dam to power it. The first store opened in 1870. By 1880, there were three buildings in town: a Methodist church, one schoolhouse, and a post office. A sawmill soon followed and by 1890 had four buildings: two churches (one Methodist), one mercantile store, and one hotel. A railroad station was constructed in 1895 but it closed down due to financial difficulties shortly after its opening. In 1897-98 an experimental steamboat called "Cotton Bowl" was run on the Yazoo River between Meridian and Brookhaven for transportation of goods overland from Mobile to New Orleans; it ran for only three weeks before being cancelled because of low water levels on the river. In 1899-1900 construction began on what would become known as Delta State University; this institution would remain open until 1978 when it merged with Mississippi Valley State University to form Ole Miss University (now UNM). In 1906-07 Brookhaven organized itself into block clubs which helped promote education within their community as well asanism among their residents; these organizations continue today as various organizations withinBrookhaven such as Kiwanis Club International or Rotary Club of Brookhaven-. Brookhaven also experienced significant growth during World War II with numerous factories established throughout downtown including Boeing Airplanes manufacturing 747s (the first jet aircraft) and Rockwell Collins missiles production lines producing Target missiles etc... ensuing development which continues even now with many new businesses having been started since then such as IBM's world headquarters across from Delta State University - still going strong!
