One such building is the old courthouse which stands on a prominent rise near Interstate 95. Another important building from this time period is the Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today and serves as a community center for residents of Brandon and surrounding villages. Over time, Brandon became an agricultural center with a large population of black slaves and free whites. By 1830, Brandon had come to be known as one of the most prosperous slave-owning communities in Mississippi. The First Jacksonian Period (1830-1849) saw immense growth at Brandon thanks to its strategic location on theMississippi River between Memphis and Nashville. The town experienced rapid expansion due to its key role as a transportation hub for goods moving from Missouri and Illinois into southern Mississippi and then northward to Atlanta. Additionally, Brandon prospered because it became one of the few slave-free settlements in northern Mississippi during this period. During the Second Jacksonian Period (1849-1877), things changed atBrandon when African Americans began working alongside white workers in what came to be called "the Great Migration." This trend accelerated following Reconstruction – which ended slavery – during which many freedmen sought refuge within central Alabama and Tennessee beyond state lines. AtBrandon, African Americans started working not just in agriculture but also manufacturing and retail jobs such as cashiers or clerks; they also played an important role in social life through their participation in local churches and fraternal organizations such as Odd Fellows lodges. Although some aspects of African American life were still restrictive – such as segregation within public accommodations – this experience helped lay the groundwork for modern black Mississippians.
