On July 10th 1860 a detachment from Company K 3rd Alabama Infantry seeking revenge for being wronged by their company commander while serving with him near Corinth went into battle against about 150 men led by Captain John Sibley near Clearwater Bluff on Red Butte Creek Bridge over Big Muddy River south of Corinth After losing about half their number they retreated upriver towards Corinth where they were joined by another detachment fromCompany K3rd Alabama Infantry commanded by Captain David Humphreys which pursued them upstream until they reached safety . This event has been called "The Battle Of Big Muddy" because it remains one of only three engagements fought between American infantry companies during the American Civil War

Many local residents deserted their homes to ride out the storm with nothing but their clothes on their backs- an experience which would later be immortalized by author Huckleberry Finn when he sums up his experiences "I never saw anything like it: all these houses dashed down; all these men and women widows or orphans; all these children crying." On January 20th 1861 (the day before Emancipation Day), Confederate General Robert E Lee's army crossed into Jackson County from Hinds County while under cover of darkness following Battles at Bull Run Bridge and Manassas Junction - effectively ending Reconstruction in Mississippi following the American Civil War. In 1865 (March 12th), when Union General Ulysses S Grant finally arrived in Meridian after driving Yankees out of Alabama & Tennessee), he found more than 1,000 citizens living without roofs over their heads due to necessity caused by Sherman's Native American Removal Act which forced nearly one million African Americans from whatever land they were living on – including 400 families who lived near Brandon – eastward into Arkansas & Oklahoma Territory! This event became known as 'The Great March.' From 1865 until its incorporation into Meridian municipality in 1972 as part of that municipality's merger with other towns within Hancock County (including Springdale & Tupelo), Brandon experienced steady growth but sparse amenities save for some limited agricultural production until white flight began beginning around 1970 when much farmland became available outside of downtown Meridian due to gentrification forces within that city limits
