Brandon, Mississippi is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area. The first mention of Brandon was in 1814 when French traders named it "Brannon." In 1828, a post office was established at Brandon and Charger's Ford on the Yazoo River. In 1830, A.H. Bridges built the first store and hotel in Brandon and operated it until his death in 1839. He bequeathed his business to son-in-law James Hinton who ran it until 1865 when it passed to his son John Lillington Bridges III. In 1870, John Lillington Bridges IV sold the business to Wm C Burchill who operated it from 1870 until 1907 when he donated it to the State of Mississippi as part of Biloxi Landing Historic District which included most of what is now Brandon village today. In 1907, following prohibitionist raids by law enforcement officers in Biloxi Landing during a statewide crackdown on liquor sales, Wm C Burchill donated all but one building in his property including the hotel to local benevolent society for use as an orphanage which continued operations until 1984 when state regulation closed down this type of facility throughout Gulfport/Biloxi Area School Districts across Mississippi due to budget cuts precipitated by recessions during that decade nationally). From 1914 through 1945 there were no businesses or residences within sight of each other on Uptown Boulevard (now known as Senter Road) north of I-10 because all dwellings were taken up by military installations then under construction near that intersection: Camp Beauregard (1914), Fort Donelson (1915), Camp Wallace (1916), etc... That changed with enactment on November 1st 1944 by Army Lieutenant General George C Marshall "Gus" Kilbourne "Crazy Gus" Smith commanding Third Infantry Division activated at Grand Gulf after more than three years effort led primarily by Colonel Jeptha Gibbs commanding Fifth Corps Combat Development Center... Upon completion later that year Camp Beauregard became operational home station for 3rd Infantry Division while Fort Donelson became garrisoned jointly with Third Armored Cavalry Regiment... On December 12th 1945 Third Infantry Division relieved First Infantry Division at Grand Gulf and withdrew into Jackson County pending occupation by Korean War forces which occurred April 27th 1946... All buildings except one--the old post office building--were razed prior to surrendering Korean forces and their Equipment September 15th 1948... Today only two small pieces remain--one on US 41 just south of Senter Road and another off N Main Street west side Highway 61 between US 60 & SH 91 . The community has experienced various types of growth over its history including retail development spurred largely by Interstate 10 access; agricultural production; commercial service sector; manufacturing; housing developments such as Walmart Supercenter opened in 2006 along Interstate 10; downtown redevelopment based around plans developed before Hurricane Katrina struck; natural gas exploration beginning around 2004 followed by renaissance activity surrounding $2 billion investment announced late last year resulting in new restaurants, hotels and other businesses opening since then
