Brandon is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 26,641 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The first permanent settler in Brandon was James Allfrey in 1819 and the town was platted in 1824. The first school was built in 1830 and the first post office opened in 1828. In 1865, Central Pacific Railroad extended its line through Brandon to Memphis, Tennessee and the town became part of that railroad's system of local railway towns. The town lost its status as a railroad town when Amtrak began service from Memphis to Mobile, Alabama in 1978; it has since regained that status as an Amtrak stop with new stations being built at both ends of Interstate 10 near downtown and on I-10 north of downtown. In 1990, Brandon annexed portions of Marshall County including rural areas east of Interstate 20 and west of US 30 which had been split between those counties when Marshall County was created from parts of Mississippi Valley districts including Tupelo and Decatur In 2000, Brandon approved an ordinance establishing itself as a city within Hinds County after years fighting for recognition from Hinds County authorities. This started what has become known as "The City vs Hinds" battle where the city argued that it should be given more autonomy than what Hinds had granted it before its annexation byBrandon
