Brandon, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,796 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The city of Jackson is neighboring Brandon on the east and west. The first white settler in what would become Brandon was James Robertson in 1827. He built a cabin on the site which still stands today. A post office called "Robertsonville" was established in 1829 and continued to serve until 1851 when it merged with Jackson to form one municipality. In 1830 Ebenezer Cook set up a mill here and began producing flour from corn that he had brought over from Illinois. By 1840 there were around 25 sawmills in Brandon and by 1850 there were over 100 mills operating in the community including ten owned by local merchants and three operated by federal government contractors. Milton Bradley opened his trading post near present-day downtown Brandon in 1853 as an outpost on the new Gulf Railroad line connecting Mobile Bay with Memphis, Tennessee via Brownsville, Texas The first store run by Bradley was open March 3, 1854; it became known as "The Post Office." In 1861 Confederate forces burned down his store but not before taking several items including some of Bradley's own flour stocks which helped finance their military efforts while they fought against Union forces occupying southern Alabama In 1865 during Reconstruction following the American Civil War all former Confederate states except for Mississippi were readmitted into the Union along with South Carolina and Georgia however Mississippians did not receive full citizenship until after Reconstruction ended in 1901 . When Compromise of 1865 passed creating new US state boundaries it moved most of Missippi east to make way for this newly created state including much of rural Hinds County where Brandon sat . After years of discussion between its citizens and trusteeship by Federal officials (the State Legislature did not re-evaluate control until 1911) Indian status for black Mississippians was finally granted effective July 1st 1870 when 5500 acres adjacent to present day town land were donated from Tensas Parish . This donation included 350 acres (120 ha) located just south ofpresent day Brandon along Red Clay Creek within today's municipal limits where now stands Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church ; also included was 15acres (10 ha) at Broad River Landing upstream from present day main street corner... Further development took shape with an increasing number of black residents coming through a process begun earlier among planters seeking access to educationTFederal agents providing security , transportationand employment opportunities encountered difficulty recruiting sufficient labor for cotton ginning mills; instead many men enlisted or worked gangs peeling potatoes for Soldier ditches army camps . These men formed lifelong descendants who call themselves "The People".
