In 1838, the Gun Slings was leased by Elijah Poole and it is mentioned in another document from that year titled “Lease of Property Concerning Arsenal & Gunslingers Place”. The lease states that “The property hereinbefore named doth appertain to me for oneyear at least, but I may renew it for an additional term not exceeding six months… whoever wishes to use or carry any arms upon said premises must first apply unto me and receive my permission”. It is possible that the Gun Slings served as a rifle range during this time period. In 1861, Confederate troops burned down City Hall in Brandon after taking control of the town while they were fighting against Union forces. This event is noted in history books as one of the most pivotal moments in local history. After the Battle of Corinth, Union troops began moving into Brandon and began searching for any rebel soldiers who had escaped across the river. One such soldier was Sergeant John Dyer who had hidden inside City Hall prior to its burn down. Aftermath of this event included damage to City Hall which still stands today and access to upper floor where Sgt Dyer resided has been restricted since then. Another reference to gun slings can be found on page 134 of History Of Jackson County Mississippi- Volume 2 (1880). This document contains an article entitled “The Firearms OfJackson County And Its Connection To The Confederacy” which discusses how gunslingers from surrounding counties would come intoBrandon each weeknight during the 1860s for target practice at Government House on State Street
