The first gun sights in Brandon, Mississippi were a pair of Bushnell shooting glasses that were used by the military to aim artillery. The glasses had an adjustable focus and could be worn on the arm or neck. They were donated to the city by Colonel John H. Toole in 1903. In 1915, General George Custer was shot and killed while leading his cavalry Regiment through Brandon. The location of the shots has been controversy ever since, with many claiming that it was across town in downtown Brandon or even farther away at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

As part of Indian Removal Act, which ended slavery in the United States, many Native Americans were forced to move northward into what is now northern Alabama and eastern Mississippi along with their livestock, crops, tools and furniture. Many Choctaw people also died when traveling through these new areas on their way to new homelands in Oklahoma or Texas. In 1870, Brandon had a population of just over 10 thousand residents but it rapidly grew into one of the most important cities in Mississippi due to its location at the intersection of two major routes: The Natchez Trace Parkway (NCT) and US Highway 49/Highway 92/US Highway 71/The Gulf Connector road system (GCT). Brandon was a small town in the states of Mississippi and Alabama until the late 1800s. In 1815, Brandon became an incorporated municipality within Mississippi. By 1830, it had become an important regional center for commerce and industry. In 1835, Brandon was made the capital of Jackson County by Mississippi General Andrew Jackson. During the 1830s and 1840s, Brandon experienced significant growth due to its position as a transportation hub and its role as a cultural center for both southern Mississippians and northern Americans. By 1850, Brandon had shrunk significantly due to heavy cotton production in those two states and it ceased to be an important commercial or industrial destination after that time.
