The history of Brandon begins with the Cherokee Indians who first settled there in 1805. In 1854, when cotton prices were high and many planters invested their money in this new crop,Brandon became known as "Cottonopolis." In 1915 a group of local businessmen pooled their resources to purchase a small section of land east of downtown for a new hospital and school. That same year the first automobile dealership opened in the town. On November 15, 1921 local men raised enough money to build a Baptist church which became Garrison Bible Chapel today. On October 20th 1959 Douglas MacArthur dedicated the original Tamiami Trail bridge over Arkansas River here in memory of General MacArthur's visit to that state during World War II; however only about 6% of what happened on that day remains today including Brandon's role as an important staging ground for military operations during that time period

Despite this history of neglect, Brandon has been reborn as an architectural landmark thanks to its unique architecture and preserved community spirit.
In 1825, a group of settlers from Brandon, Mississippi founded the town on the banks of the Big Black River. The settlement was named after their leader, James Brandon. The town grew quickly and by 1835 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1838, the United States government granted Brandon land for an agricultural colony. The colonists were given permission to grow cotton and other crops. They also were allowed to build homes and outbuilds. The colony failed in 1840 and some of the colonists returned home while others moved on to other settlements around Mississippi.
