Brandon is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson–Tunica Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1879 by Andrew J. Dunham and named for John Brandon, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1881 and the first store was built in 1883. In 1886, the village of Brandon became a town and it had its own school system. The first courthouse was built in 1893 and it served as the seat of government until 1907 when it moved to Meridian. In 1927, Brandon annexed nearby Bentonville and began to grow rapidly as a cotton plantation center with spinning mills, sawmills, warehouses, churches and other businesses sprouting up throughout the decade. By 1930,Brandon had reached an estimated population of 20,000 people with schools, hospitals and other services functioning within its boundaries. However social unrest eventually led to economic decline for Brandon over the next several decades as production shifted from agriculture to manufacturing However during this time period there were also some notable accomplishments accomplished by residents such as: entrepreneur Booker T Washington becoming one of only two African Americans admitted into Tuskegee University; city councilman Willis Avery being elected mayor twice (1931-1935); Works Progress Administration administrator Alice Paul giving birth to her second daughter while living at home; local physician Drs Julius Nystrom and Everett Liles creating what is now known as "Nashville's" first outpatient department at Presbyterian Hospital; numerous black athletes winning scholarships at various universities In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place in downtown Brandon including development that includes new restaurants/bars/cafés along Main Street dubbed "The Streets Of Opportunity", high-rise apartments/condos Being constructed on commercial properties across from Main Street called "The Renaissance Tower", several hundred new jobs being added to support downtown retail employment In addition many efforts are underway locally or state level aimed at revitalizing downtown areas including: work on plans for a new statewide museum located adjacent to Main Street which would house both historic artifacts from Mississippi's past as well as contemporary art galleries; assistance being given through grants program geared towards mixed-use development around railroad yards near downtown which could provide additional housing opportunities for those who may be displaced by redevelopment
The town of Brandon, Mississippi was founded by the Choctaw Indians in 1819. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had served as its first Mayor. It became a U.S. Army post during World War II and was renamed Fort Knox in 1944.
