Brandon is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,589 at the 2010 census. It was founded on May 10, 1881 by settlers from Illinois. Brandon Gold Rush The first gold rush to take place in Mississippi took place in nearby Meridian in 1858 and soon after that small town also became known as the "Gilded Age" due to its luxurious hotels and other businesses becoming one of the most prosperous cities in the state. However, it would be Brandon that would become truly famous for itsgolden age when prospectors discovered large amounts of gold near the town's namesake creek on May 10th, 1881. As word spread about this find and potential wealth there quickly arose an excitement among adventurers and entrepreneurs alike who began to flock to Brandon looking for a piece of this new golden land. No one knew just how large or valuable these deposits actually were but with pricesetting triple what they had been two years earlier when Meridian became the first city to get its own gold mine, it was only natural that some people decided to go all out and try their luck mining here instead of waiting for higher priced claims elsewhere. Not long after Silver King Mines opened up along Highway 19 near present day Bryantville (just south of where Brandon now stands) miners started coming not just from Michigan but also Illinois looking for a piece of this burgeoning industry so much so that by 1893 almost half of all Cement Creek Mine workers came from Illinois alone! This influx made significant changes not just locally but statewide as well as leading to increased competition and investment which eventually resulted in more production being produced at Cement Creek than any other mine ever did! Although many miners died during those early days working below ground – primarily due to accidents –Brandon ultimately became known as "the Gilded Age" town because it contributed significantly to its success both temporally and nationally!
Brandon was established in 1821 as a trading post on the Yazoo River between present-day Jackson and Sumter. The name of the post, which means "bridge over the water," suggests that it was an important location for crossing the river. In 1831, Brandon became a town and was renamed after General John C. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town prospered until 1863, when Confederate forces moved into central Mississippi and burned most of Brandon.
