The town was founded in 1876 by J.C. Watts as an agricultural community on the banks of the Arkansas River at its junction with the Mississippian Trail. In 1907 it became a city under the name of Brandon and retained that name until 1910 when it changed to its current spelling. The city was platted in 1908 and became a municipality within Holmes County on July 1, 1909; it lost this status on December 31, 1916 when Holmes County merged into Jackson County. The town was first known for its cotton plantations which were operated by white people and black people who worked together on these plantations during Reconstruction (1865-1877). After Reconstruction ended, many freedmen moved to Brandon to work these plantations or to other nearby towns such as Meridianville where they could live free from White Authority control. Many African Americans also immigrated to America during this time period because they wanted a better chance than they had in Africa of achieving success in American society. The original inhabitants of Brandon were primarily white traders who came from New Orleans and points north along the Gulf Coast before arriving in what is now Holmes County about 1836-38 according to historical records but no specific evidence exists supporting this claim; some believe that they may have come via Mobile Bayou rather than through Arkansas River crossing due to their lack of transport options between those locations at that time1-3 However there are compelling contemporary evidence indicating that some early settlers did indeed cross the Arkansas River2-4 This event likely occurred around 1840 when several families abandoned their homes near present day Meridianville because slaveowners there refused them passage back across the river should they reach American soil 3 As part of efforts designed to reestablish White Supremacy over African Americans following Reconstruction, many Black men were effectively taken from their families and forced into labor on cotton plantations throughout Mississippi 2 Some historians have speculated that slaveholders may have deliberately allowed freedmen access only short distance upstream from their properties so as not To endanger future production or reduce competition among themselves 5 Some blacks living downstream from plantation ownership did manage eventuallyto escape enslavement thanks largely to benevolence or military action against owner's forces 6 By 1870 most slaves had been sold off although smaller numbers still remained working on small farmssteads throughout central Mississippi7 Most whites who owned slaves either gave them away or leased them out for various purposes including transportation, domestic service, manufacturing activities or subsistence farming 8 While some Whites continued operationsBlack schools were established only for children enrolled west of Jacksonport while all other schools closed down circa 1915 9 A few hundred Black men however endured life underground until 1865 10
