Brandon, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,831 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Jackson County. The first white people to arrive in what became Brandon were Quakers from Pennsylvania who built the first house on the site in 1799. They named it after their leader and mentor John Bradford.. In 1826, Andrew Jackson set up a post office here and began to develop the town as an agricultural center with river access. A post office was opened here on November 1, 1827; it was renamed Brandon in honor of General Andrew Johnson. By 1830, there were over 200 residents living here. In 1834, Captain George Silliman bought some land here and organized a citizens' rifle club to defend against Indian threats towards his home town of Yazoo City on the Arkansas River. This effort led to important political connections for Brandon through Silliman until his death in 1865 at age 71 from fever contracted while hunting buffalo near Yazoo City. By 1870, business had begun to grow rapidly by virtue of its location at crossroads for travelers coming intoJackson County and Memphis on one side and Vicksburg on the other - this made it an attractive spot for cotton plantations that grew rich from export production during Reconstruction years following the Civil War. After passage of Interstate 40 bypassing Brandon by way of Meridian Avenue (now I-240) brought new competition to local businesses during the late 1960s oil crisis when traffic diverted away from downtown areas around I-40 spurring economic decline which has continued since then with only minor growth consistent with competing services available within walking distance today compared back then including restaurants/bars/stores/car dealerships etc lining Navigation Street running perpendicular bisecting downtown along I-240 just south of old Post Office Park now daycare center retail plaza movie theater etc... Brandon, Mississippi was founded in 1848 by409 white men and women. The town was named for General James K. Brandon, a Confederate general who fought in the war. The first store in the town opened in 1850. The town grew rapidly after it was established and had five stores by 1860. By 1870, Brandon had a population of 1,500 people and twenty-four businesses. It became an important transportation junction during the early years of the American Civil War because it was located on the Yazoo River between Memphis and Vicksburg. The Union Army attacked Brandon on October 17, 1862, during the Battle ofBrandon Bridge. The Union forces killed thirty-one residents and destroyed most of the town’s infrastructure before withdrawing two days later. After this attack, Brandon declined to participate in any further military actions against the Confederacy. However, it continued to be occupied by Confederate troops until 1865 when Union troops burned it again as part of their campaign against Mobile Bayou Province. Today, only a few traces remain of what once were Brandon’s vibrant commercial districts – its cobblestone streets are still visible; its three churches are still standing; and its four public schools remain operational thanks to donations from local citizens over time. But even without these reminders of past prosperity, one can still appreciate whatBrandon has become: a small community that is home to many descendants of those who founded it more than 150 years ago
