In 1819, the first Methodist church was built in Brandon and it remains one of the oldest churches in Mississippi. The town was named for General Andrew Johnson who served as President Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President from 1868-1874 and then as president from 1879-1881. When Brandon lost its status as an incorporated municipality in 1907, it reverted back to being a rural zip code with a population of just over 1,000 people. The town offers both recreational opportunities such as fishing and hunting (the latter being popular due to its abundance of alligators), and also educational opportunities such as four schools that serve students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade: Bemis Middle School; Gateway High School; Southwestern Christian Academy; and White Eagle Elementary School. He noted that the people of this village “look very sad and forlorn” and he thought they were “a race apart from all others on earth.” The first white person to live in Brandon was John Sibley in 1819. At that time, there were only a few scattered families living hereabouts. It wasn't until 1836 when Andrew Jackson became president of the United States that things changed significantly in Brandon as it became one of his favorite towns to tour during his campaign trail throughout southern Mississippi Territory votes being cast for Jackson over General Zachary Taylor ballots which must have showed reluctance by some residents about Jackson's potential rule due to territory issues at hand including land acquisitions made by Simon Bolivar Bonneville while he served as governor of Alabama). In 1840 following completion of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad through central Mississippi and adjacent Tennessee - much needed infrastructure development - many new settlers began arriving into what would become known as "The Great South" thanks largely to President James K. Polk's efforts during his presidency; these settlers included Carver himself! A post office called Brandon was established at this time withinJackson County; however it remained inactive for several years before finally receiving mail from Biloxi on June 17th, 1850 (the date on which Confederate General Braxton Bragg burned down Ft Union barracks south of downtown Biloxi). Postal service did not resumed until May 6th 1870 upon reestablishment following Reconstruction (and again until May 2nd 1936); however local citizens continued providing their own postal services until 1959 when Randolph Gadsden assumed control over government affairs having previously been an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff against incumbent Cpl Price Sr.. After World War II ended with Japan surrendering both Mainland China and Korea Peninsula possessions reverted back under U.S.-administered trusteeship status subject to various economic sanctions with Japan continuing its military occupation throughout most if not all aspects), Postmaster Randolph Gadsden decided that periodical mailed notices/packages/letters should continue delivery even though prices had increased dramatically since World War II ending hostilities; thus ZIP code 73260 became home to one of America's earliest mailorder houses!
