Brandon, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1867 by white settlers and named for John A. Brandon, an American senator from Kentucky. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The first European to set foot in what is now Brandon was Nicholas de Bry in 1692 when he and his men explored the area for trade with the Indian nations. In 1797, French explorer Jean Lafitte journeyed through this area and claimed land here for France. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down a store here while besieging Mobile Bayou to prevent British forces from sailing upriver to take possession of that port. In 1865, white residents of neighboring Meridian were forced to leave their homes after Confederate General Robert Ewell's invasion of Mississippi resulted in the Battle of Meridian on July 4th that year. The remaining black Mississippians who remained loyal to the Union movement moved into nearby towns such as Tupelo and Harrisonburg before being ordered by Union Major-General Ulysses S. Grant to abandon their positions at Meridian on July 26th or be interned with Confederate troops until they could be evacuated or surrender unconditionally. On September 3rd 1865, most of Brandon including its courthouse and jail were destroyed by Union artillery during the Battle of Corinth Ferry Bridge over Yazoo River following which all black citizens were required to leave town under military guard without any warning or opportunity for return or escape; several hundred womenfolk did manage to flee across swollen Yazoo River with small children behind them before being captured by Union cavalry later that day and driven back inland towards Tupelo where they eventually surrendered on October 12th 1865 (the same day as Fort Sumter). Brandon began Reconstruction in 1868 when Congress passed a bill authorizing reconstruction efforts in all southern states which met stiff resistance from Southern Democrats who saw Reconstruction as a tool used by northern Republicans intent upon taking over local government control through various forms of patronageocracy while excluding African Americans altogether from participating fully within national society (a policy known as " Jim Crow"). However despite some limited progress made during these early years due largely to lack of available funding rather than any real effort on part of either party,[1] many aspectsof everyday life continued unchanged until well after World War II ended disastrously for southern blacks thanks largely to racist attitudes towards those living outside Northern America.[2][3][4] Black Brandonians generally welcomed post-war rediscovery growth opportunities Tensaw Valley & surrounding rural areas offered access ample grazinglands & employment opportunities good schools became available making education an important plank in community development plans; however much like other postwar Rural American Communities there has been little integration into mainstream society resulting instead often high levels Of poverty & crime rates among descendants remain today
