They named their new town after the Gulf of Mexico because they believed that it would help protect their business from being taken over by other businesses in nearby Mobile. The Biloxi community thrived for many years and quickly became one of the most important ports on the Gulf Coast. In 1810, Mr. Biloxi lost control of his business and went bankrupt. This led to a period of political instability in Biloxi which caused many businesses to close down and people to lose their jobs. However, the Biloxi community persevered and soon regained its economic stability. In 1824, Mr. Biloxi purchased a piece of land at current day Sulphur Bayou for $400 dollars which he used as his personal property until his death in 1843. He left behind a wealth of assets which helped make Biloxi one of the most prosperous cities on the Gulf Coast during this time period. Biloxi also experienced some significant changes during this time period. In 1865, Miss Charity moved her family to New Orleans so that they could start anew after experiencing racial discrimination in Mississippi Valley during the American Civil War (1861-1865). This event is often considered to have started the end of white supremacy in Mississippi Valley and helped create an open society there for African Americans starting from then on. Additionally, between 1915-1945 there was much dredging done below sea level due to shipwrecks discovered alongshore which created extensive amounts of mud flats known today as "The Bight." This dredging exposed old burying grounds and cemeteries dating back centuries which were finally excavated and preserved with assistance from local community organizations such as The Veterans Museum Foundation (now known as Housefront Books) throughout recent decades!
