Woodbury is a town in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,573 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Nearby cities include Brooklyn Park and Mankato. The name "Woodbury" originated from a Dakota Indian word meaning "place where they build their lodges." The first settler in what is now Woodbury was Jonas Suter who arrived in 1857. His wife, Johanna (Larsen), also came overland from Sweden that year with their three children. They built what is now the Suter home on Second Street in Woodbury in 1858. The first store opened in 1860 by Jesse Haddock and his brother-in-law George Lapp as J & G Hardware Store #1 which closed about 1950. In 1865 Haddock married Anna Carlson and moved to her farm west of town on First Avenue North where he lived until his death in 1924; she died there in 1951. In 1870 Peter Olson set up a cotton gin near the present day intersection of Third Street and Snelling Road northwest of town on land granted him by Governor Alexander Ramsey for this purpose In 1872 Samuel Warne bought some land east of town from Peder Andersen for $40 per acre In 1895 John Vandemare started farming south of town along Third Street betweenMN 15th St./MN 24th Ave SE In 1916 Harry Kline started raising chickens on section 51500 N (now CR 601 N) east of town near GN 96th St NW A post office was established at Woodbury on October 14, 1862, under the name "Lenox". On July 6, 1865, it changed its name to "Woodbury" after General David Ewing's headquarters camp within Confederate territory during the American Civil War outside Corinth, Mississippi
