In early November 1881, ninety-six-year old Woodbury residents James and Sarah Goodrich erected a sign on their house which read "Our Home - Welcome." TheGoodrichs were the first settlers in what is now Woodbury. They had arrived in 1859, when the area was part of Dakota County. In 1870, they bought land from the Hennepin Sioux tribe and began to erect a log cabin. James died in 1896, but his wife continued to live there until her death in 1914. Their son John also lived there until his death in 1951. The Goodrichs are buried at nearby Keystone Cemetery. The town of Woodbury was platted on February 14, 1883 by Dutchman Johannes de Vaux. It became a U.S. post office on March 1, 1886 under act of Congress No 587 entitled "An Act for organizing and developing the Territory of Minnesota". On July 15, 1912 an amendment to the US Constitution was ratified giving Woodbury city status as well as other benefits (such as better streetlights). On January 1st, 1915 an act providing for statehood for Minnesota was approved by both chambers of the Minnesota Legislature and signed by Governor Olson making it official with incorporation on January 3rd that year On December 9th 1916 local farmer George Wessel moved into town after being chosen as delegate from Washburn County to be one of two commissioners who would supervise construction of new roads throughtown; this commission eventually became known as the Minneapolis & Duluth Railway Company or M&D Railroad Commission On October 12th 1923 Jesse Owens won gold medals at the London Olympic Games setting off an American boycott of that year's Summer Olympics
