In 1960, Woodbury changed its name to Woodbury after its founder, Colonel George W. Woodbury, who had also been named one of the 50 founders of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The community began as a farmstead on the east side of what is now downtown Woodbury. By 1881, the post office had moved to its current location on Third Street and became an important transportation hub for farmers and settlers moving westward from St Louis County in Illinois into central Minnesota Territory. The townsite grew rapidly thanks to both agriculture and manufacturing opportunities that arose from railroads running through what is now downtown Woodbury along with other river crossings such as Milford Bridge and Sibley Ferry Road (now Interstate 94). In 1960, when Minneapolis-St.Paul became an independent city, it decided to change its name to coincide with that city's history and culture; accordingly, Woodbury was renamed too. The name stuck around until 1984 when it was replaced by Maplewood within the city limits of Minneapolis-Saint Paul - making it one of only two towns in Minneapolis-Saint Paul that never lost their original namesakes (the other being Bloomington).[1] Today, Woodsbour
