Winona is a town located in the United States. The population was 9,244 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Winona-Rochester, MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Winona means "the land where wild flowers grow." The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Winona were French explorers and fur traders in 1758. They named the area for Notre Dame de la Rivière, a Benedictine monastery near Quebec City. In 1824, General James Kossuth led a group of soldiers and settlers from Illinois through Minnesota into what is now Winona County. Kossuth's goal was to create an Indian reservation on which he could build his new nation. After arriving in what is now Winona, he founded the Townsite Company and laid out streets and blocks that are still seen today. The town site was accepted by the government as an official incorporation on April 14, 1825. The first business in town was a store operated by Elijah Whitehead and Isaac Miller on First Street east of Main Street about one mile west of present day Fourth Street/Upper Road (now South Main Street). Other early businesses included Aiken & Armstrong general mercantile store (later renamed Armstrong’s), built on Third Avenue south of present day Second Street; Joice’s bakery south of Uptown; Mrs. Grieve’s dressmaking establishment at Second and Main Streets west of Upper Road; Goodrich tailor shop at Eighth and Second Streets north of Upper Road; Wagon Wheel tavern at Seventh and Second Streets east of Lower Road; Sibley grocery store on State Highway 50 between Tenth Street northward to Lower Road (now Middle School Drive) - also known as Sibleyia - later acquired by Hennepin County for use as its county courthouse; Schmitt Bros., feed contractors from 1827-1857 In 1856, coalmining began operations in what would become Winona with results that helped support nearby Rochester during its boom times In 1865, lumbering started up around here as well with mills being built along South Main Street northeast corner Seventh Avenue northwest corner Eighth Avenue southeast corner Ninth Avenue southwest corner Twelfth Avenue It wasn't until after World War II when heavy industry arrived with winnaca becoming a major manufacturing center for many years including auto parts production before ceasing operations around 1980 Today there are few if any active businesses remaining within this thriving community just off I-196 exit 157A

The first post office in Winona was established in 1854; it continued operation until 1865. The town's name comes from Missoula Creek which flows through the community. At one time, winnies (a type of corn) were grown here for export to other parts of the country; however, this practice ceased around 1915 when there was an abundance of corn available elsewhere. Today, winnies are produced only for local consumption and are not exported any longer. In 1860s and 1870s many settlers came to Winnica because they saw great potential for farming there due to its fertile land and rich water sources including Missoula Creek and Pine Lake The Townsite Plan drawn up by Alexander Parkhurst in 1871 provides good evidence that early Winnica residents had definite intent to establish themselves as a cohesive society with their own municipal government The first election held under the new Constitution took place on November 3rd,-1872 with Fenton Asbury as Mayor On October 1st 1875 (4 years after incorporation), Hennepin County Annexation created 4 new townships-Albany Hills(3), Blooming Prairie(2), Easton Heights(1) & Galesburg(1). These townships would later be joined together as the City of Winona . . .
