The history of Winona began with its location on a major trade route connecting Dakota Territory with Illinois andMinnesota. In 1854, Danish settlers arrived here from what is now southern Minnesota to live near the river that would later be called the Missouri River. They were soon joined by others from Illinois and Wisconsin who had followed steamboats downriver for goods or to find new land for themselves and their families. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Winona; most were farmers who grew corn, beans, wheat, oats and other crops along the Mississippi River valley around this time. In 1876, when Clearwater Township was organized as part of Dakota Territory following its purchase from Canada by Ulysses S Grant during his America's Civil War I campaign (the Treaty of Paris ended war on November 12th), Winona became one of twelve towns within Clearwater Township when it was first established under Iowa law on January 1st, 1881 (). At that time only women could vote (this right eventually was granted to all citizens by statehood). Population growth continued throughout the early 20th century as railroads came through town making it easier for goods to reach consumers outside the agricultural heartland east of Minneapolis/St Paul; however industry declined during World War II which led to job losses among residents as well as decrease in population size until 1950 when employment stabilized at about 60%. Afterward there has been steady growth with increased employment opportunities both inside town limits as well as out-of-town jobsites such as Dover Air Force Base (now Dover Municipal Airport) which has helped support local retail businesses since 1980s without sacrificing quality of life within town boundaries Winona also experienced dramatic social changes due to rapid population growth: two hospitals opened up shop here including St John’s Hospital (founded 1916), becoming one of North America’s leading Adventist healthcare facilities; today Holy Cross University offers medical degrees online via distance learning programs from many world locations including USA & Canada During recent years there have been efforts made by some members of our community to improve public transportation options into/out OF Town while maintaining qualityof life within our borders
