Winona, Minnesota is a town located in the Gallatin Valley in central Mn. The population was 9,702 at the 2010 census. The name "Winona" comes from the Dakota Sioux word for "wind place". In 1851, the first post office in Winona was established. The town was platted on August 17, 1852 by Alexander Hennepin and Peter Fetterman. It became a city on April 14, 1907. On December 12, 1912, Mayor J.B. McFarlane gave the first municipal seal of Minneapolis/St Paul County to Winona residents John Fenton and Harry Heineman as part of their merger into that city. Winona has been home to many Knife companies over the years including Bowie knives (founded 1871), Springdale Knives (founded 1901), Haggan & Sons Cutlery (founded 1908), Northstar Cutlery(born 1913), and Wabasha Knife Works (born 1915). Most of these companies closed down or merged with other knife makers over time but some continue to produce quality knives today such as Spyderco USGKnives which is headquartered in Winona and also produces high-endknives such as their ATS-3400 series which are now considered world class products by many knife enthusiasts
