Winona is a town in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. Winona is the county seat of Hennepin County. The name Winona comes from the Dakota language wordwinó (a grassy area). The first Europeans to visit what is now Winona were fur traders and missionaries in 1824-25. They named the area Sioux City because they thought it resembled Standing Rock Indian village on the Missouri River. In 1856, John Wesley Powell led an expedition upriver to discovery what are now Colorado and Wyoming when he passed through this part of Minnesota on his way to explore Yellowstone National Park. He called the stream he followed Winona Creek after a local leader who had helped him find it. In 1870, residents of Sioux City voted to become their own city and began calling themselves Winonians or "Winoneers". By 1890, about 50% of the residents in Sioux City were winoneers and 60% were white citizens of other towns in Hennepin County that year. In 1912–13, during various amendments to the Constitution of Minnesota which gained statehood, Winnie was designated as its county seat - one vote away from Minneapolis since Minneapolis had been incorporated as a city in 1854 but not yet chartered as a county seat like other towns within Hennepin County. Winnie's status as county seat changed again on October 1st 1915 when all fifty-eight municipalities within Hennepin County became counties with elections being held at least every six months rather than annually like earlier. A post office called Winnie was established at this time; it remained operational until December 15th 1906 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail volume fromWINONA The first school building in Winona was erected in 1902 by Reverend Japhet Kappenberg and Mrs Jane Olson for students attending Methodist Episcopal Church services near downtown instead of going out into rural areas where there were no schools available for them. This school served grades K-8 until 1907 when a new high school built east of town opened which served grades 9-12 until 1916 when another new high schoolbuilding west of town opened which served grades 13-18 until 1963 when both buildings were replaced by present day WINONA High School (). Both buildings still stand today and are used as community center/ auditoriums respectively
