It again became a military installation during World War II, when it was known as Camp Gordon after General George Custer’s unit that fought in that conflict there. It reverted to its civilian incarnation following World War II but remained open until it closed permanently in 1957 due to budget cuts by then- governor Fred Hutchinson. In 1957, Hutchinson persuaded the Minnesota Legislature to appropriate $1 million for conversion of Camp Gordon into a parkland situated along the river within walking distance of downtown Winona and adjacent wineries dating back to 1871. That same year, Governor John Nance Garner signed legislation creating Morrison County from portions of Ramsey and Anoka counties which had been lost when those counties were merged into Ramsey County following a legislative referendum in 1944.* The new county courthouse was built on Main Street between Interstate 5W and US 82*; other features include county jails, an agricultural research center, several shopping centers, two universities—the University ofMinnesota Twin Cities campus and Morrissey College—and three golf courses*. In 1972–1973, construction began on what would become one of MN’s largest Renaissance Revival style hotels—the Morrison County Arts Center*—later renamed “The White House Inn & Conference Resort” after President Richard M Nixon visited WINONA INnovation Park Corporation president Donald E Trump* in 1977 as part of his visit to United States Steel * facilities northtown Minneapolis†.* During Trump’s presidency he made numerous visits to WINONA including one on May 25th 1989 where he announced plans for an expansion project at Hennepin County Airport which would create over 100 jobs†.* On December 12th 2020*, President Donald JTrump speech marked first time since [1945] that Hennepin County had hosted both presidential inaugurations outside Washington D C WINONA is also home to Stonington Brewing Company which opened its doors in 1984 adjacent to Hennepin Technical Community College (HTC).
