Winona is an incorporated city in Chippewa County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Winona has been a part of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1853. The first Europeans to visit what is now Winona were Frenchmen and Indian traders traveling from the Great Lakes region in search of fur resources. They named their new settlement after French explorer La Salle's party that explored this area in 1669-1670. At first smallpox killed many of these early settlers; however, they soon developed corn crops and other agriculture as well as built churches and schools. In 1853, Winona was incorporated as a town by act of the Minnesota Legislature following the state's admission into the Union that year. The town experienced rapid growth during its early years due to its location on top of a rich vein of lead found near present-day Fillmore and then sold for capital investment to start business entrepreneurs such as George Wohlgemuth who mined lead until his death in 1865. This Mining Period also saw construction of major streets and public buildings including a courthouse (1857), fire station (1863), library (1872), post office (1882), gymnasium (1901) and baseball stadium/mosquito tower (1906). The 1920s were difficult for Winona as prices for agricultural commodities dropped precipitously due to world wars which had a significant impact on Minnesotan economy; however, some residents managed to revive local businesses through innovative marketing schemes such as "The Hungry Caterpillar" advertisements which encouraged people to buy ice cream from local merchants instead of going out for food when prices were high elsewhere around town. The late 20th century brought advances in transportation and communication which led to increased tourism within Winona limits; however, numerous aspects such as crime rates have remained relatively stable over time while properties have become more affordable making it one of America’s most desirable towns for housing developments or single family homes
Winona was founded in 1854 by Danish immigrants, Ole and Emilie Rasmussen. The Rasmussens were the first Europeans to settle in Winona, and they started a school in 1855. In 1865, the Rasmussens built the first store in Winona. In 1868, they married Marilla Sorenson and moved to Winona permanently. They had four children: Olaf (1869-1929), Ida (1871-1945), Anna (1874-1964) and Margrethe (1877-1963). The Rasmussens ran a grocery store until 1901. At that point, they started a flour mill which became one of the largest employers in Winona. The mill produced flour for local markets until it closed in 1966; however, the mill is still standing today as a historic structure.
