Willmar is a small town in the Census Tract of Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 796 at the 2000 census. The community is located on the east side of the forks of the Missouri and Sioux Rivers. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Willmar was James Doherty in 1856. Doherty and his wifeAnna built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river near present day Washburn Avenue and Northern Boulevard. In 1860, William Prentice bought one-third interest in Doherty's cabin from Anna for $10 cash and started to build himself a home there. By 1868, Prentice had purchased all but two acres of present day Willmar Township from John Hennessey for $210 cash This original township would grow to around 100 parcels with an estimated population of 350 people by 1870 when it changed its name to Dakota County after being approved by state legislators On December 12, 1871, Dakota County was organized with Willmar as its first county seat. The land that would become Willmar was donated by members of the local Prentice family who were also early settlers hereabouts including their father-in-law Nathan Beavers (1811-1881) In 1876, pioneer Elias Buehler settled downriver from where most today's buildings stand on Valentine Drive just across from current day Highway 824/Minnesota State Highway 258 about four miles west of where downtown now stands Buehler gave his land along Valentine Drive to George Stephenson – future governor of Minnesota – as part as payment for services rendered during Ulysses S Grant’s military campaign against General Victor Schleicher at Fort Snelling in 1864 In 1915 when then Mayor Wm J Donoghue proposed annexing neighboring townships due to water shortages in central Minnesota he said "I don't think I'll get opposition from any section because we have everything here" He went on to win reelection unopposed that year In 1924 when then Governor Albert Lea offered $5 per acre for all private land within 10 miles thereof he called it “A new beginning” grantees included prominent Minnesotans such as Judge Roy Bean (1902-1976), Drury Jarrell (1920-2009) and Bob Dennison (1921-) who donated over 2500 acres including what became north Star Lake Park which still borders Willmar today Today more than 3000 residents call Willmar home with an estimated total economic value totaling nearly US$130 million according to 2016 estimates

The town became a railroad center, and during the early 20th century it became a popular tourist destination for people from all over the Midwest. In 1915, Willmar was renamed after President Woodrow Wilson. The city has experienced many changes since then, including becoming an agricultural center during World War II; experiencing rapid growth following the opening of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border crossing in 1957; and becoming a bedroom community for Minneapolis following suburbanization in the late 1960s.
