In 1919, a group of men from Willmar founded the Soft Gun Club in order to spread the word about soft gun cases. The club held meetings monthly and sold soft gun cases to members. In 1928, the Soft Gun Club was disbanded due to lack of membership. However, the idea of selling soft gun cases continued and in 1937, a new Soft Gun Club was formed by men from Willmar and other townspeople. The club met monthly and sold its products at local shows. In 1941, the club changed its name to the Minnesota Rifle Association (MRA). MRA members lobbied for passage of the National Firearms Act which banned all handguns except those made by government agencies. The act helped create America's firearms market and enabled manufacturers such as Colt Inc. and Winchester Repeating Arms Company to expand their businesses. Today, MRA members continue to sell softgun cases at local shows across Minnesota.

Willmar is a small town in the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Union County. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. Willmar is located on the eastern edge of the state, bordered by Apple Valley to the north and east, Masonic to the south and west, and White Bear Lake to the northwest. The community was founded in 1887 by Swedish immigrants who had come to work on a rail line that ran through what is now Willmar. The original settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, potatoes, apples and other vegetables while working on the railroad. By 1920, however, most of the original settlers had either died or moved away because of economic conditions in Minnesota. After World War II many new residents came to Willmar looking for jobs in agriculture or industry. In 1957 they voted to become an incorporated village under State law 6-5-1 which allowed villages with a population over 5 hundred people to start having their own government without depending on county government services. This change made Willmar one of only two towns in Minnesota that fully serve as municipalities (the other being Alexandria). In 1969 when Stroudsburg Township decided not to incorporation into Union County as planned due to low taxes rates and high school overcrowding Stroudsburg residents petitioned for incorporation into Willmar instead which they received 8-3 with three abstentions from residents living in neighboring Alexandria Township. On November 3rd 1970 a meeting was held at the Pioneer Hall whereStroudsburg would be annexed intoWillmar alongside its neighborAlexandria Township creating what is now known as "The Twin Cities". Today there are more than 2 thousand citizens living in Willmar with over 950 businesses employing nearly 2200 people including 50% of all workers within union county! Industries include medical technology (25%), health care (15%), heavy manufacturing (10%), retail trade (7%) among others!
