The history of gun lights in Willmar, Minnesota started out as a simple way to signal warning to other drivers when someone was approaching on the road. At first, the lights simply served as indicators for other drivers and were not actually firearms. In 1907, a man by the name of Lester Denton started selling what he called “gun lighted cages”. These cages were made from two pieces of metal with either an open or closed top. The upper part of the cage had a small light that could be seen from a great distance and the lower part held a battery which would turn on once the person inside hit one of the buttons on their cage. This system proved to be very helpful and was eventually installed at several intersections in Willmar. By 1912, gun lighted cages had also been installed at various businesses in town. By 1916, gun lights had become common throughout Willmar and were soon being used by police officers as well as citizens. In 1919, a new system was developed which consisted of three sets oflights mounted on poles around town. This system proved to be much more effective and was later adopted by the military. In 1929, gun lighted cages becameillegal in Willmar because they were considered dangerous and liable to cause accidents. However, this did not stop people from continuing to use them for safety reasons until 1949 when they finally became legal again under new rules set forth by local authorities.

There are also several non-profit organizations that provide services such as parks maintenance or environmental restoration within the community limits

In 1962, Mayor Harry Waring spearheaded efforts to rename Willmar as "Minnesota's Most Elaborate Town." This effort helped help make Willmar a center of local government and prosperity – not only did it boost economic development but it also made it easier for people from outside of the town to get involved in local affairs. Today, despite some challenges (most notably high housing prices), Willmar is still one of the most vibrant communities in Northern Minnesota – home to a wide range of community groups and businesses, as well as an active cultural scene that contributes significantly to its overall vibrancy. Willmar was founded in 1871 by lumbermen from eastern Minnesota. The town grew quickly, and by 1893 it had a population of 10,000. In 1907, the city became the capital of Dakota Territory. The town remained an important center for commerce and culture until the early 20th century when railroad development led to growth in neighboring Rapid City and Pierre. Willmar's fortunes declined after World War II as its proximity to those cities made it difficult to compete economically. Today, the town is primarily a research and development center with a small population.
