Willmar is a small town in Minnesota, located on the shore of the Great Lakes. It is known for its annual Willmar Folk Festival, which attracts concerts, art exhibitions, and family events. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Willmar was John Augustus Stratton. He and his wife Hannah were the first to arrive in 1855 and started a small farm near present day downtown Willmar. In 1858, they built a cabin on the bluff overlooking the water where they lived until their death in 1902. Their son Charles built another cabin nearby in 1865-66. In 1870, Danish immigrants Ole Kirk Christiansen and his wife Anna came to Willmar from Motala and started a grocery store on Main Street with two clerks. They continued running it until 1915 when it became known as The Pioneer Store; after that it operated as an individual business until 1955 when it merged with The Minneapolis Grain Company to form The grain company Store (now called Macy’s). In 1897, Norwegian immigrants Trygve Anderssen and his wife Tilde came to Willmar from Eidangerstad in Nordland county and started buying land around town. They also opened a general store there which was renamed The Andersens Store in 1910 when they moved into their current location on 2nd Avenue North (the original store building still stands). This was one of the earliest stores within easy walking distance of downtown Willmar - even today you can find several items from this early era at various locations around town including the old post office building on 3rd Avenue North (#8), Max’s Game & Grill (#11), etcetera! Harold Sivette bought out Trygve Anderssen’s interest in 1912 and continues to run The Andersens Store as an independent business currently selling groceries online/in-store only! In 1922-23, Scandinavian immigrant Mathias Olsen arrived from Halsa Municipality just south of Oslo County with his family; he started farming hereabouts along with other new arrivals such as Harry Kjærnesen who would later become mayor of Oslo City Hall fame – all these people brought their skills and experiences back home with them while starting up businesses hereabouts: Olaf Olsen ran an ice cream parlor next door to Andresensgeneral Store; Nils Gramstad operated a millinery shop next door to Kjærnesens grocery store; Hans Jonsson ran a bakery next door to Gramstad’s bakery; Peder Hiilseth ran a restaurant across 4th Street from Kjærnesen’s restaurant; Ole Pedersen took over operations at Hiilseths restaurant when HIilseth died suddenly during World War II.; finally Odd Reidar Larsen took over ownership of both restaurants after Hiilseth's death.) In 1925 Mathias Olsen married Agnete Ditlevsen who had come over from Norway earlier that year aboard the SS "Larsen" together with her brother Harald Olufson Jr., sister Ida Kaielsen Olufson (later Kaupoline), brothers Hansen Nielsen (Hans Jørgensen) and Halvor Andersen (Odd Reidar Larsen), cousins Torben Christensen (Bjarne Jensen) and Knud Rasmussen (Mikael Rønning) plus some others! Among these newcomers were many talented farmers like Rasmus Quesnel who would go ontofound snapdragons company hereabouts before moving away permanently…Norwegian immigrants also founded breweries like Kongsviken Brewery situated east of town off Highway 7 about four miles northeast then continuing eastward past Dahle Prairie into rural Hennepin County finally becoming defunct during Prohibition years.) All told there must have been close to 100 individuals or families who settled down hereabouts by 1900!!! By 1930 not one house remained standing within central downtown Willmar aside from some private homes owned by prominent citizens!! Over time much valuable infrastructure has been developed including streets named after notable citizens like Olson/Anderssen Streets etcetera but most importantly our rich cultural heritage has grownsteady HEREWITHIN THE COMMUNITY OVER TIME!!!

The town's first store opened in 1870 and it had a population of only fifty people when it incorporated as a municipality in 1915 In 1916, the city annexed the towns of Clearwater and Springdale to form an even larger municipality which had a population of 3,992 residents On January 1st, 1970, Willmar became one of the last municipalities to be created within the Minneapolis-St Paul Metropolitan Area following mergers with other municipalities across the metro area including Bloomington (1948), Falcon Heights (1963), Maple Grove (1969), Shakopee (1973), White Bear Lake (1978), Stroudsburg (1979) and Alexandria Heights (2002). In recent years however some smaller villages have also been amalgamated into larger municipalities such as Fergus Falls on February 15th 2017 which has increased its population from 2,569 to 5,927 residents while Stillwater has merged with nearby Rice Lake to form an evenlarger municipality having 8,846 residents

The town grew rapidly after it became an incorporated municipality in 1907. In 1917, the United States entered World War I and Willmar was designated as a strategic airfield for the war effort. The town experienced significant growth during the 1920s and 1930s as agricultural production increased and new industries developed including printing plants and automobiles. However, during the 1940s and 1950s, Willmar’s population began to decline as manufacturing shifted from the town to larger cities in Minnesota and elsewhere. Today, Willmar is a small community with a few hundred residents that maintains its rural character by conducting many of its activities within its boundaries.
