The name comes from Willmar Lake which lies within the city limits and is also where the first post office was established in 1887. The town was founded in 1881 by farmers who had purchased land east of the Missouri River. It grew slowly until it took off after World War I when demand for housing and jobs led to growth. In 1970, the city annexed part of neighboring Hastings Heights and became Willmar City again. Growth slowed during the early 21st century as many families moved away or left for other cities due to cost of living or other problems such as crime and lack of opportunity. However, growth has resumed in recent years with new development along University Avenue including a variety of businesses and apartments that have drawn people back to Willmar.
