In 1945, when U.S.-Soviet tensions escalated into full-blown Cold War hostilities, business owners throughout central Minnesota decided that they would rather see their towns go under than participate in what they saw as an anticommunist plot by Moscow. Many people left Willmar for various reasons – some due to political differences over America's role in the Cold War, others because wages had stagnated or declined since 1945 – but few abandoned their homes completely; most simply changed hours or stopped working altogether so that they could stay within reach of friends and family who resided elsewhere (although some did leave voluntarily). The WILLMAR family has been involved in local politics throughout their history; two members have served as Mayor of Willmar (John W., 1938-1952; Margaret S., 1978-1982).
